American and sports heroes- Jack Dempsey, born on June 24 1895, was a poor farm boy who learned to fight by his older brother Bernie. Growing up, Jack’s family moved from place to place in search of work and while they did this Jack’s brother Bernie would fight in bar saloons to help earn extra money for the family. Jack later observed this and wanted in, so Bernie proceeded to instruct him like telling him to chew pine tar gum to strengthen his jaw and to soak his face in brine to toughen his skin. Jack began fighting at small bars and events and soon his name was slowly gaining popularity and everyone wanted their chance to fight him. Jack started getting bigger and better fights after he knocked out heavily favored boxing champion Jess Willard. Jack Dempsey was popular not only because he was a great fighter, but also because he showed that poor people could, through hard work, achieve great things.
George Herman Ruth Jr.was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore Maryland. He achieved amazing things in baseball and for Americans was a hero at a time when Americans were beginning to believe in their own power and potential. In many ways Babe Ruth represented the new American Dream. Lou Gehrig was born in New York City in 1903 and like Babe Ruth also played for the New York Yankees. Gehrig was also a hero because he broke records and was amazing player. More than that, he worked hard and represented for Americans that hard work paid off and led to great possibilities.
