The Harlem Renaissance was “A time when the Negro was in vogue”. This time was also known as the “jazz age”, “the Black Renaissance”, and also “The Negro Movement”. This time was known by these names because African American musicians, writers, and performers were the dominant scene. During this time questions such as, “Was this the beginning of a new era in American culture?” and “Were the barriers between races being eclipsed? arised. This age mostly took place and the end of WW1 and up to the Great Depression. Also, racial barriers were rising and more and more blacks were being lynched. Jazz at this time was very popular. Jazz music is combined with African American Blues and ragtime, and European-based popular music. Black authors tried to point out the injustices of racism in American life, similar to journalist and other “crusaders” in from the Progressive Era, early Jazz fame come from playing in storyville, all the factors that cause the Harlem Renaissance were not negative however. Zora Neale Hurston even noticed that many white American artist were including aspects of African American Culture in their works, she called these people “Negrotarians”.
